August Game Day East 08/17/25 Cogs, Carracks & Caravels

Our Game Day East for August held at the spacious Impact Game Center was part of our continuing celebration of Naval Gaming Month with a real treat by Dave Murvihill as we traveled back to medieval times for high seas adventure using Cogs, Carracks & Caravels game rules and some of Dave’s superbly crafted model ships.

The scenario required the English fleet to sail from the length of the game table with a group of much smaller but still deadly French ships to create a bit of chaos.

Here we see the English ships about to set sail with the French in the distance.

Dave was not only kind enough to present this game for the group but sent us in an after action report as well so we will turn it over to him.….

My fellow Pirates, Privateers and Patriots:

Thank you for your efforts in the battle off Calais. Our plan was sound, and but for a foul wind that supported the English, we would have taken the enemy great ship and captured the deceitful king.

Our first wave was well placed despite the wind, but a deft maneuver by the flagship allowed it to slip away. Still, our friends fought valiantly and stripped the English escort from the Henry Grace a Dieu. Captain Craig left the hulk Hogan crippled and almost sinking, but Nina’s crew was spent and unable to rejoin the chase.

The diminutive cog Tulip caught the great ship first, and almost under the guns of Calais. A combined assault by captains Tom, AJ and Les was not enough to prevent the massive enemy ship from bulling its way through our lines and to safety.

Les takes time to engage an onlooker explaining the game and our group. Our Game Days are our best advertising to reach others who might be interested in our hobby. It is always important to be welcoming to those who stop by our games and answer any questions they might have.

We can only hope that our demonstration of the continuing fighting spirit of the French people gave King Henry pause and eased his demands at the treaty negotiations. Now that war is over we must find new ways to occupy ourselves. For me, it is back to shipping rice…

Your comrade in arms,

Game-master’s comments:

Challenging game, the French got a bad roll on the wind, but still managed to make it a good fight. A couple better fouling rolls and Henry would have  been in trouble. The last two games involved one side running away, making it harder for the attackers to stay fouled. Still, I enjoyed running the game and hope everyone enjoyed playing.

Dave M.

Thanks Again Dave for running such a fun and challenging scenario for the group. We can always count on you to take us to something different and fun. Thanks to the crowd of players who came out on a very warm Sunday and to the fine staff of Impact Game Center for their continued support of our group.
