It was a journey back to the American Civil War for our Semi Regular Retirees Game this Thursday at Miniature Market Rock Hill. Breaking out the 6mm figs and combining them with the free download rules from the folks at WoFun Games.

Steve L, Mark J and Dave B took command of the Confederate forces while Steve T and Mark W commanded the Union with the objective being a crossroads in the middle of the battlefield.

Early in the Game Steve T deployed his artillery on his side of the creek to help hold the flank Steve L attempted an attack across the creek with his cavalry. Using the rules for terrain he found that his mounted unit was not particularly interested in making the crossing ending up disordered. The next turn’s fire was even more devastating to the Rebel Cavalry as the artillery was not kind to them.

On the Confederate Left Dave deployed his battery to hold keep the Union away from his arriving units and this seemed to work pretty well. The cotton puffs represent units that have fired, which reduces movement.

An overview of the battlefield. Fields and woods blocked line of sight restricting the fields of fire in many instances.

A close up of the 20th IL showing it has taken two hits. One more hit and a stand will be lost.

Mark W’s Union line opened fire upon the Rebels sending out a hail of musketry, but the dice were well below average and only two hits were scored.

Dave pressed an attack with his Cavalry on the Rebel Left that was less than successful. Mark W followed up with a two pronged counter attack that eventually broke the Confederate horse soldiers sending the reeling to the rear.

A view from above showing the Union line under Mark W firing a second time with much better results.

As the game drew to a close we see the critical cross roads under great pressure from the Confederate Center. The Union Left had been turned by Steve L’s persistent attacks forcing Steve T to retire his remaining guns into the cornfield. The outnumbered Union Center was retiring in good order but the Rebels would likely win the day. The game saw some great dice rolls followed by some much less so. Some daring cavalry charges and some frustrating moments trying to cross creeks. All in all the Wofun rules seem to be very playable and easy to learn. There will be a few tweaks to the homemade QRS, but we will certainly give this another go.
Thanks to the players for joining in the game and our Thanks to Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support.

Looks great, and sounds like a good gamin’ result was achieved with the rules.
Could they be a keeper?!
Dave,
I think they are pretty good rules for being simple and free. We had a few discussions on them as the game proceeded and I know I missed a couple of things as well, but I like them so far.
Sounds like the troops are marching in step……
