Wednesday Night Gaming 09/10/25 Action at Setauket 1779.

The Wednesday Night group at Fantasy Books & Games in O’Fallon, IL were treated to a bit of historical skirmish action using Fistful of Lead Horse and Musket Rules in an American War of Independence Scenario by Steve King so we will turn it over to Steve to hear about the battle.

After Action Report by Steve King

This was my first attempt at adding some additional fun and challenges with Fist Full Of Lead Horse and Musket.

“Setauket is a quiet hamlet on the north coast of Long Island. Just across the sound is the state of Connecticut, and General Washington’s headquarters. Setauket is the center of the Culper Spy ring, gathering inteligence for Washington about the British in New York. Well that’s the background. The British short of housing for there troops, thanks to a fire in New York, decide to garrison some regulars in the hamlets of Long Island, this obviously impacts the activities of the Culper ring. The operator of the ring decides the regulars have to go and organizes a raid, with two objectives, 1 get rid of the regulars and 2 steal their horses destined for British cavalry.”

Initially all seemed to be going well for the Colonials, but a sprited attack by some Indian Allies lead by Steve Lowry, set back the poorly armed Minute men of Ray Gluck. Ray Runge with his Indians did succeed is carrying off a few horses, with great loss, the British were not too concerned. The attack in the center was initially vigorous but seemed to stall when it was struck by withering rifle fire from some stubborn Hessian Jager. The Colonial Light infantry were driven back by an almost suicidal charge by Dave Murvihills Loyalist’s, whose leader seemed to relish the challenge of fighting a melee while down and wounded!

Adam Jones stalwart defense of the cornfield and left center, seemed to convince the Patriots that today was not to be their victory.

Dave Murvihills Loyalist did accidentally wound one of the Culper ring bringing a message to Setauket, but he survived and made it through ok.

The most important thing was everyone had a good game and enjoyed themselves”.

Historically the Patriots caught the British napping, but after an initial success the British wore them down and the attack ran out of steam.  On the positive side all this did not ultimately interfere with the activities of the Culper Ring and they were able to give Washington inteligence right up to the conclusion of the war, and the British had no clue who they were or how they did it!!!!

Thanks Steve, for the intriguing game scenario, the report and photos, those that were unable to make it will certainly enjoy seeing what they missed. Thanks also to the fine staff of Fantasy Books & Games for their continued support.

  1. I live in the Setauket area. Stony Brook, one town over and part of the same school district. Could you share the orders of battle you used for the scenario? This would be a great project. Thank you.

    1. Chris,
I will forward this to the GM and see what he can do to get you a reply. Thanks for visiting our website.
