Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance – St. Louis Semi Regular Retirees Game 04/16/26 One Hour Wargame & Wings of Glory

A Great turnout for our weekly Thursday gathering this time held at Miniature Market Cave Springs as we saw two games hit the tables.

First up was D.J. Carter presenting a Napoleonic era game of Neil Thomas’s “One Hour Wargame” rules using 15mm “ish” plastic figures on a small gaming format. D.J. had reduced the scale to reflect the smaller figures and had some nice range sticks for the players to use.

Terrain was perfectly designed to provide both objectives and interrupt fields of fire for the assembled forces without overpowering the small format. D.J. elected to use the rule book’s scenario creation system so as the players prepared in learning the rules they also generated a random force structure by dice roll.

Reports are that the game played well and was followed by a fairly long discussion regarding some potential tweaks to the system that might be made while still keeping in the spirit of the simple, fast playing intention of the rules.

Our second table took to the rather unfriendly skies of WWI France. It was 1918 an Allied offensive was in the works and the skies needed to be cleared of the opposition along with one very pesky observation balloon. Thus was the setting for our “Wings of Glory WWI” game that was a run through for Game Day East on 04/19.

This was a great chance to run through some previously unused rules and get familiar with them with regards to special damage, ground fire and observation balloons in preparation for a three mission game. The players were very generous in working through both the problem on the table and the appropriate rules in the book.

Of the three games we ran, the balloon turned out to be a tough target in two of them outlasting the Allied fighters only succumbing in the third try. Suggestions included a players quick reference sheet which has happily been found online and making some adjusted to ground fire. So adjustment made and we are ready to roll them out at Game Day East.

A great benefit of our Retirees group is the generous and supportive nature of the numerous highly experience GMs all pitching in to help with whatever project is in front of them.

Thanks to D.J. for presenting his game and we look forward to him doing so again in the not too distant future.  Thanks to all the players who helped make the game day enjoyable and Thanks to Miniature Market Cave Springs for their continued support.
