Our Game Day West for November centered on the American Civil War as our topic and what better way to represent this era than with a battle that took place in the early part of the war in Southwest Missouri. Bob Alsop & Burt Campbell teamed up to give us a look at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in August 1861 using some superbly painted 28mm figs and exceptionally well crafted terrain that were a sight to behold. Using the free download “Valour & Fortitude“ rules from Perry Brothers Miniatures these two created a challenging experience for the players to enjoy.

Bob beyond helping with the presentation provided us with a great after action narrative to take us through the events of the day and we will just turn it over to him ………

” I am going to try my hand at narrating a little bit here. First off for the confederate side it was Chris who is completely new to war gaming and miniature gaming and Eddie. For the union side it was Ricky and Pete.“

“The battle of Wilson’s Creek started off with a bang as both sides, elected to fire their artillery at each other’s artillery scoring hits, but not taking anything out. Chris’s Confederate forces charged out ahead to the Creekside only to be met with intense fire from union sharp shooters and artillery.”

“Sadly, Chris’s confederate unit was wiped out to the man. On the left flank, Pete moved his forces up to the creek and over as Eddie played cautiously near the farm yard, Electing to allow Petes forces to cross the river and hit him in mass.“

“The battle see saw’s back-and-forth, with the Confederate forces taking the upper hand, union forces were badly in need of their reserves which had yet to arrive. Finally, on turn six the union reinforcements arrived at the back of the confederate lines, Near the left flank.”

“Eddie was now hard pressed with union forces to his rear and in front of him. Some crafty use of fate cards, allowed the confederates to stall the union, pincer movement and inflict heavy casualties.“

“Ricky and Chris battled out the middle and right flank of the union line and with night settling both forces had taken heavy losses and withdrew from the field. After tallying up the broken and shattered units the confederates had squeezed out a very narrow victory.“

Thanks Bob for that great game report it was some action which shifted dramatically throughout the afternoon.

Our appreciation to both Burt and Bob for presenting this wonderful scenario as part of our “History Through Another Lens Initiative” to help students from St. Charles Community College the opportunity to both play a great game and learn about our shared history at the same time.

Thanks to the players Pete, Ricky, Eddie and our welcome to Chris who we hope to see again at the table soon, we are happy to have you join us.

As always our appreciation to the fine staff at Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support of our table top historical gaming.
