Early in the morning, panzers of Panzer-Brigade 10 attached to the Großdeutschland Panzer Regiment assembled in combat formations and began an assault on the village of Verkopenye, an important objective for Großdeutschland as the town had one of the few bridges over the river Pena critical to opening the way to Oboyan and Kursk beyond.
