History Through A Different Lens

Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance – St. Louis has supported the historical table top miniatures gaming hobby since it’s founding in the mid 1990’s.

In 2024 we launched our “History Through A Different Lens” Initiative to promote the use of miniature gaming to help participants understand history in a challenging yet fun environment.

Partnering with the St. Charles County Heritage Museum we focused on historical regional events of the American War of Independence & the American Civil War. Presenting The Battle of St. Louis 1780, Wilson’s Creek 1861, Lucas Bend 1962, Attack on Cahokia 1780 and Fort Donelson 1862,

Participating in a three part program on local history we visited Friendship Village in Chesterfield, MO to bring residents an opportunity to see the problems faced by commanders of the era of the American War
of Independence.

Battle of Cahokia 1780

Working with a local junior college history teacher we have created themed games that offer students “extra credit”  to look at history through a different lens.

Our “History Through A Different Lens” Initiative is an effort to present table top miniature gaming as a vehicle for students, educators and members of the general public to process historical events in an alternative manner. Participants have the opportunity to not only solve the historical puzzle but to do so in an atmosphere of diversity, teamwork and camaraderie. They will need to exercise analytical thinking, leadership and social skills in order to achieve the goals of the scenario. Our well prepared volunteer GameMaster/Facilitators provide all necessary supplies for the event.
