Our Thursday Group met at Miniature Market Rock Hill to engage in a bit of American War of Independence Naval gaming as Steve Lowry using “Action Under Sail” rules presented his Battle of Grenada 1779 Battle pitting the British (D.J. & Kevin) vs the French (Mark J., Ravi R & Pat L) in a duel on the high seas.

Mark was in the French van and lead off the battle with shots at the British leading ships scoring some longer range hits. The British held their fire maneuvering to close the gap early on, biding their time to unleash a double ball initial broadside.

The French Center was under command of Commodore Pat L and he kept close to the lead ships to support Mark. Ravi seized and opportunity with the wind to unfurl full sail and come from the back of the battle line to cut it in the middle and cross into the teeth of the British line cutting it in half. In doing so he delivered several devastating blows to the already damaged British lead ships and cut the line in two ending any hopes by the Royal Navy squadron to retake the island.

DJ in the British lead fought his ships well, but was hampered by the bad advice to load double ball by Kevin and that along with a few well placed dice rolls by the French sealed the fate of the scenario.

Great game by Steve Lowry who presented a superb AWI 250 game scenario that will appear on the tables at Barracks Battles in June.

This brings up a valuable point to share about our Retirees Gaming Gathering. It naturally serves as a time for our group to get together and enjoy a few hours of rolling (and occasionally cursing the) dice with friends. It is however much more as it serves as an incubator for our entire gaming community to learn new rules, test scenarios and tap into the vast accumulated gaming knowledge that this group of veteran game masters brings to the table both literally and figuratively. At any of our Retirees games you likely have several hundred years of combined game mastering experience around the table. A group that has seen multitudes of rule sets, historical scenario designs, miniatures of all scales and games of every ilk. If you are thinking of presenting a game to an upcoming national, regional or local convention, monthly game day or other event. Don’t hesitate to tap into this resource to help you improve what you are planning to run.

Thanks to all the players and of course our continued appreciation to Miniature Market Rock Hill for their ongoing support.
