Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance – St. Louis Semi Regular Retires Game   04/02/26 Silver Train to Denver Redux

Our Thursday afternoon group gathered at Miniature Market Cave Springs for some rootin’ tootin’ wild west action as we returned to the not so peaceful environs of White Wash City, Colorado Territory somewhere in the midst of a 1950’s TV Western…Using “The Song of Drums and Tomahawks” rules by Ganesha Games the scenario unfolded.

Wells Fargo Agent Jim Hardie and the local Sheriff (D.J.) we guarding a shipment of silver taken from the nearby Black Rock Gold Mine and awaiting the coming train to transfer it on to the custody of F Troop US Cavalry (Mark J) for safe keeping.

The Connecticut Gang (Jay and Steve) led by the desperado Steve Lowry were on their way to relieve the local authorities of their responsibilities and help themselves to the riches.

Following some great feedback from the players from our earlier presentation of this scenario adjustments were made to starting positions and the initiative so that the action got underway earlier.

Jay and his crew from central casting started out moving up and telling a barmaid to go ahead of them into the street. Steve moved up just across from the sheriffs office getting ready to make fast work of this episode. D.J. sent a deputy to commandeer  the wagon across the street and had two of his team grab the first box of silver to be ready to load. Meanwhile the Sheriff and Hardie kept a watchful eye.

The next moves were Steve ordering Bo Peep and her sheep ahead of his band towards the Sheriffs office, Jay moving slowly by steadily across the street to cut off the shipment from the railroad track. D.J. was able to get the wagon moved fairly quickly towards the silver and the loaders were ready with the first box.

Shots rang out quickly as Steve opened up on Jim Hardie only to find out that he was a tougher target than he expected.

D.J. bought what time he could for his loaders only to find that Jay had turned his flank and was able to wound one of them before the first box was onboard.

It was move and counter move with the dice not always being the most charitable to the players and several members of the Connecticut Gang were much worse for wear when the train whistle announced the arrival of Captain Parmenter of F Troop at the edge of town.

Mark’s Cavalry moved slowly up behind Jay’s Central Casting forces and just about put the squeeze on him, but he managed to get the drop on the wagon driver and ordered him to move out with two of the three boxes of silver.

Mark Johnson sent in a report on his Cavalry detail so we will turn it over to him……

“Lieutenant Weiss had only Platoon Sergeant Blau and the Security Squad to lead off the train to support the beleaguered Wells Fargo Agent.”

“With Squad Leader, Corporal Feer acting as rear guard, the half dozen  troopers swarmed forward.”

“While “Sharpshooter” Lieutenant Weiss was armed with Pistol and Cavalry Saber, each of the soldiers carried standard issue revolver and repeating carbine, and boots.”

“Private Dryer and Private Heinz were average soldiers.”

“But Private Swine lived up to this name, big and nasty as can be.”

“As the soldiers closed on the Wells Fargo Office, the notorious bandit, Steven Lowry, boldly galloped the wagonload of silver across street and into the hills by abandoning his gang to the wrath of the Army and the Fargo Agency, the clever villain did not have to share any of this booty.”

“Troopers from the Train:”

“Lieutenant Weiss – Sharpshooter, Pistol, Sword”

“Sergeant Blau – Rifle, Pistol, Hatchet”

“Corporal Feer – Rifle, Pistol, Knife”

“Private Dryer- Riflle, Pistol, Knife”

“Private Swine – Rifle, Pistol, Knife (+1 Melee)”

“Private Heinz – Rifle, Pistol, Knife”

Fending off the Cavalry now in his rear and yelling at the wagon to keep moving over the din of gunfire Jay put the objective straight into the hands of Steve who with a good activation roll jumped on the wagon and encouraged the driver to move under his direction.

In the exchanges Wells Fargo Agent Jim Hardie was wounded and it’s unknown if he will return to his duties. In true form for a Fifties Western, Outlaw Steve rode off with the wagon and treasure, his followers being somewhat left behind hoping to catch up with him at the Hideout for their share.

Further episodes await as the law is now on the trail of the Connecticut Gang…….

Thanks to all the players and to Miniature Market Cave Springs their continued support and we remind our community to shop local.
