Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance – St. LouisGame Day East 04/19/26 Speed Circuit & Wings of Glory

A Great turnout for our monthly Game Day East as we saw two games hit the tables.

First up was a jumbo and enhanced version of the Avalon Hill high octane classic “Speed Circuit” by Dennis Hill taking the racers to Hawthorn Hill Speedway with racers twisting around the corners and going flat out in the straightaway hoping to be the first to get the checkered flag.

With each of the players (Ray R, Steve K and Tom V) taking  control of a Formula 1 racer.  Setting up includes distributing points to Start Speed, Top Speed, Wear and other attributes. Players move based on their speed, adjusting it by expending a wear point or rolling the chance dice, where a bad roll could cause you to move through, spin out, or even crash out of the race. Whoever gets over the line first wins.

Our second table took to the rather unfriendly skies of WWI France with our mini campaign game “Breaking the Guns” a three mission linked game set in 1918. An Allied offensive was just about to happen but those pesky Germans had put up an observation balloon to direct artillery. Thus was the setting for our “Wings of Glory WWI” game.

The Allies had to put that observation balloon out of business in the first game, with a follow up scenario of finding the artillery and then knocking out those same batteries.

Previously run on Thursday 4/16 at our Semi Regular Retirees Game this scenario now buffed up and including a new gaming mat (courtesy of an image provided by Dave Schaffner) involved 3 linked games with the teams having to make choices beyond the immediate situation and go for the longer campaign.

The first mission found Adam J and Jon B as the allied players facing off against Les H with one aircraft and some anti aircraft machine guns. There was not a lot of nuance to the first scenario of the campaign as both Jon and Adam headed straight to the target. Adam caught some ground fire and a solid hit from the Albatross flown by Les, but got up close and personal with the balloon unloading his rockets at close range a double boom result ended the careers of the two observers and secured the first victory for the Allies.

Mission 2 called for the Allies to bring in a two seater with a camera (flown by Jon), find the guns and get the photos off board. Jon headed towards the ground positions looking to get the photos and get out but the first turned out to be an AA Machine gun. Not to be deterred he pressed on to the next position while Adam and Les engaged in a dogfight trading blows.

This photo mission went to the Allies as they did discover the guns and managed to shoot down an Albatross at the cost of a Sopwith Camel. Les came back on but was unable to catch the two seater with the valuable photos, leading us to mission 3.

It was time to take advantage of the previous work and get bombs on the target in mission 3. The guns must be destroyed to help the boys on the ground. Jon needed to leave but was ably replaced by a new player Wyatt at the stick of the two seater now laden with bombs.

After some misdirection some damage, an onboard fire leading to erratic maneuvers Wyatt scored the hit needed to take out the guns winning the day for the Allied side.

Thanks to all the players who helped make the game day enjoyable and Thanks to Impact Gaming Center for their continued support.
