Those of you who were able to join us recently for our Semi Regular Retirees Game featuring the Battle of The Nile got to see my group of generic age of sail ships as they maneuvered around the table top. In order to differentiate the ships I added a rather crude tag system to them with a bit of color coding of the fleets (British Red/French Blue) with the smaller ships being a different color.
Kurt Linke one of the squadron commanders made a suggestion (with an inherent offer) that I add eight sided bases to the ships upon which I could add designators to help the players keep track of their fleet units. So warming up his 3D printer he busily cranked out a bundle of them for me to use and they are now in the queue to get painted, mounted and ready for an upcoming game.
