July Game Day Previews

July brings a full slate of gaming on both sides of the river, with a mix of historical depth, fast-play systems, and a bit of cinematic chaos. Whether you prefer brigade-level maneuver, naval engagements, or something a little more… toothy, there is a table waiting for you.

Game Day West

Saturday, July 11, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Miniature Market – Rock Hill
9755 Manchester Rd, St. Louis, MO

Table One: MO-Miniatures – American Civil War Action
Hosted by Dave Schaffner and the Epic Battlefields crew, this setup proves that less can indeed be more. Two portable maps share a single table, delivering double the action with fast-moving brigade-level engagements using the Grand Tactics system. Designed for four or more players, this is an excellent opportunity to jump into Civil War command without a heavy rules burden.

Table Two: War Master
Patrick Connaughton brings another engaging tabletop experience to the second table. Expect a well-run, approachable game with plenty of opportunity for both new and experienced players to get involved.

Game Day East

Sunday, July 19, 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Impact Gaming Center
49 Ludwig Dr, Fairview Heights, IL

Game Day East offers a blend of humor and historical naval action.

Panic at the Beaches – The Return of Sharknado
GM: Ray Gluck
Using the Fistful of Lead rules, this fan-favorite scenario returns with all the over-the-top action you would expect. Sharknado is back, and absolutely no one is safe. A great pick for players looking for something fast, fun, and unpredictable.

Into the Breach
GM: Adam H. Jones III
Using General Quarters 3.3, this naval scenario pits a German task force against an Allied distant escort. Expect tense maneuvering, tactical decision-making, and a strong historical feel as both sides race to achieve their objectives at sea.

Both events are open to newcomers and veterans alike, making July a perfect time to bring a friend, try a new system, or just roll some dice and enjoy the community.

Special Event!

An Underappreciated Victory Bernardo de Gálvez’s Mississippi River Campaign Against the British in 1779

Saturday, July 25, 20261:00 – 3:00pm

Old St. Ferdinand Shrine School House

1 Rue Saint Francois St,

Florissant, Saint Louis, MO 63031-5126

An Underappreciated Victory

Meet Author Steve Kling as he introduces his new book about the American War of Independence in the West.

Bernardo de Gálvez’s Mississippi River Campaign Against the British in 1779

By Stephen L. Kling, Jr and Kristine L. Sjostrom

Gálvez’s Mississippi River campaign in 1779 during the American Revolutionary War is truly an unappreciated victory today. While brief, it was tremendously impactful. Not only did it secure the Spanish rear and permit the free flow of aid up the Mississippi River to the Americans, but it also paved the way for the Gulf of Mexico operations against Mobile and Pensacola. It has been largely overshadowed by the more spectacular sieges of Mobile and Pensacola where Gálvez had abundant military resources. However, considering the difficult circumstances and limited military resources for the Mississippi River campaign, it is much more impressive. Gálvez overcame terrain and weather difficulties, logistical challenges and British fortified positions, all with the knowledge that he had to strike swiftly and secretly before British superior forces converged on New Orleans. The almost negligible number of casualties weighed against the capture of several forts and posts and hundreds of prisoners in such a short period is as shocking today as it was to the British high command. Every military campaign needs a little luck, but Gálvez took a huge risk against considerable odds and ended victorious. The close examination of the campaign in this book reveals its brilliance.

Barracks Battles @ DieCon 2026: RECAP

Strong Games, New Connections, Growing Horizons

Barracks Battles 2026 delivered an exciting and engaging weekend of historical gaming, highlighted by a full slate of games and expanding connections across the hobby.

This year saw 28 games successfully run—exceeding the number scheduled—a testament to the dedication and adaptability of our Game Masters. Saturday was especially vibrant, with full participation across a diverse lineup of games that kept tables active and players engaged throughout the day.

Our AWI 250 initiative continued to shine, with six American Revolution-themed games bringing the period to life and reinforcing our commitment to historically rich, immersive play experiences.

A major success this year was the introduction of our Learn-to-Play demo area. This trial effort proved highly effective in welcoming new players, generating interest, and lowering the barrier to entry for historical gaming. Based on its success, we are already planning to expand this concept in future events.

Beyond the tables, Barracks Battles made significant strides in strengthening its role within the broader gaming community. We were pleased to welcome increased participation from respected manufacturers and creators, including Ares, Warlord Games, Phalanx, and Things From the Basement. Their presence added energy to the event and deepened ties between players and the industry.

We also expanded our reach through meaningful networking efforts. Progress on our Educational Program included evaluating new game concepts and connecting with a convention group from Fulton, Missouri—opening the door to future collaboration and growth.

Looking ahead, we are actively exploring ways to enhance the overall player experience. This includes reviewing member suggestions to improve the game sign-up process and investing in upgraded table presentation, including new mats to elevate the visual appeal of our games.

Our Game Masters once again proved to be the backbone of the event, with several stepping up to increase their contributions and ensure a dynamic and varied schedule.

Barracks Battles 2026 demonstrated the strength of our community and the continued appeal of historical gaming. With new partnerships forming, educational opportunities expanding, and a commitment to continuous improvement, we are building strong momentum for the future.

The best is yet to come

Our Website Reaches Milestone

Reaching 100,000 Visitors: Worth Celebrating

Since launching in August 2023, our website has officially surpassed 100,000 visits—a milestone that reflects the strength, enthusiasm, and continued growth of our community.

What began as a focused effort to share historical gaming content, event information, and educational resources has steadily evolved into a hub for players, organizers, and history enthusiasts alike. Every scenario download, event announcement, after-action report, and shared resource has contributed to building a space where history and gaming intersect in meaningful ways.

This achievement is not just about numbers. It represents:

  • A growing interest in historical tabletop gaming, particularly within the American Revolutionary War era
  • Increased engagement from players, educators, and event organizers across the region and beyond
  • The success of community-driven content, including event coverage, scenario design, and collaborative projects

Over the past year and a half, the site has supported major events, promoted conventions, and provided tools for both new and experienced gamers. From Barracks Battles to convention showcases, the reach of our shared efforts continues to expand.

Most importantly, this milestone belongs to you—the community. Every visit, share, and contribution has helped shape what this platform has become.

Looking ahead, the goal is simple: continue to grow, improve, and provide valuable content that supports historical gaming and education. Expect more event coverage, new scenarios, expanded resources, and opportunities to connect both online and at the table.

Special Mention to Les Hostetler for all his efforts to bring and keep the site online and working and to all who have visited and contributed.

Thank you for being part of this journey—and here’s to the next 100,000.

Education Working Group Busy During the Summer

Our education group is staying busy over the summer as we evaluate new games for students and prepare for the months ahead. This season gives us valuable time to test what works best in educational settings, refine our approach, and identify games that are both engaging and meaningful for learners.

A major part of that effort includes our continuing involvement with Barracks Battles as well as our cooperation with Semi Regular Retirees Game. We are also exploring new titles, including our recently added enlarged and enhance version of Taifa, with more games already in the works. These opportunities give us a broader range of mechanics, themes, and teaching possibilities to consider.

One of the strengths of this work is the involvement of highly experienced game masters from Semi Regular Retirees Game day who participate in the process. Their knowledge, judgment, and practical experience help us evaluate games more effectively and make better choices for student use.

Their input is especially valuable when it comes to balancing fun, accessibility, and educational value. With experienced game masters contributing to the discussion, we can better assess how a game will actually play in a classroom, club, or event setting.

Why This Matters

Choosing the right games for students takes more than simply finding something entertaining. We look for games that encourage critical thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, and active participation. Summer provides the time to review those qualities and prepare for the upcoming academic year.

This work also helps us build a stronger library of options for classrooms, and otherl events. By testing a wider range of games now, we can better match them to different groups, learning goals, and play styles later.

Looking Ahead

There is still more in the works, and we expect to keep testing, comparing, and refining our list of student-friendly games. With Barracks Battles, Semi Regular Retirees Game, and newer titles like Taifa and our previous group of games all contributing to the process, we are building toward a stronger lineup for the year ahead.

Obituary

Edward “Ed” Ray Gray, Jr., a beloved member of the St. Louis gaming and history community, passed away on June 15, 2026, at the age of 76. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Ed leaves behind a legacy defined by creativity, service, and a deep passion for storytelling and fellowship.

A proud Army veteran, Ed served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam as a helicopter supply technician. After his military service, he carried forward a lifelong love of camaraderie and shared experiences, which he found again in the gaming community. Ed was an enthusiastic player of board games, Dungeons & Dragons, and Warhammer, and he was especially known for bringing imagination to life through the characters he created and painted himself. His artistry and attention to detail enriched every table he joined.

Beyond gaming, Ed had a wide range of interests. He was an avid fan of fantasy and comic books, a regular moviegoer, and a member of the St. Louis Jazz Club, where he enjoyed music alongside his wife, Alma. He also had a deep appreciation for history, often traveling with family to visit historic battlefields and attend reenactments—blending his love of learning with time spent among those he cherished most.

Those who knew Ed will remember not only his talents and interests, but his warmth, humor, and generosity. He built connections across generations, from fellow veterans to gamers and family members alike. His presence at the table—and in the lives of those around him—will be profoundly missed.

Memorial contributions in Ed’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.
