Heavy rains may have rolled through the area, but they did nothing to dampen the spirits of our dedicated gamers at July Game Day West on Saturday 7/11. Our players came out ready to roll dice, push miniatures, and enjoy another outstanding day of historical tabletop gaming.

On Table One, Dave Schaffner unveiled his impressive new terrain boards for a mirror-image American Civil Warbattle that gave players a real treat. Bill D., Bob A., Burt C., Chris K., and Benjamin A. took command in MO-Miniatures’ 10mm brigade-level ACW action, fighting over Plug Hill and the Nickel Crossroads. The battle quickly developed into a fast-moving and highly entertaining contest, with both sides working hard to turn flanks and seize the initiative. It was a great showcase for the scenario, the terrain, and the players’ tactical creativity.

Our second table featured a lively run-through of “Taifa,” part of our History Through Another Lens Initiative. Kurt L., Pete P., and Kevin F. joined in this six-player game set in the struggle between Christian and Muslim powers for control of 11th-century Spain. The bot-driven non-player factions added an extra layer of tension and made for an excellent demonstration of how the game handles larger multi-faction conflicts. In our session, one of the bots claimed victory in the third and final turn by securing 13 areas, proving once again that this game can deliver drama right down to the end.

We were also thrilled to have our friends and fellow gamers from the St. Louis Historical Gaming Society out in force, presenting Vuca Games’ “Imperial Elegy,” a game that explores the challenges faced by the great European powers in the 1800s and in the years leading up to World War I. Their table added yet another outstanding historical offering to the day and gave attendees a chance to see a very different era brought to life on the tabletop.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to play, as well as to those who stopped by to visit and spend time with us. We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to the outstanding staff at Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support of our historical tabletop gaming community.

Kevin,
This is a sharp Game Day review – with excellent photos.
The quick-play ACW scenario came out worth a plug-nickel, in getting tactical game action fought on a battlefield approaching grand-tactical scale…..a hoped-for gaming “sweet spot” aimed for.
The guys liked the package (w/brigade commands minimum, and having some degree of maneuver made efficient), and so we’ll be doing this again for the next Game Day -West on August 1st.
Thanks for the AAR here, and to the players supporting MO-Miniatures and this historical wargaming continuing.
Dave
Thanks for the kind words. We did have a great day of gaming on all the tables across the game room. Lots of activity and good times.
Adding a few pics here, to show how Warlord Games’ Epic ACW bases could be used for this style of grand tactical gaming (pic shows my 10mm bases [foreground] used in this recent game, but how easily Warlord’s 13.5mm Epic stands could “shoe-in” for this scale of gaming) –
Here’s a pic of the Texas Brigade in Epic 13.5mm.
Hopefully we’ll be able to sample these on-board at our next Game Day – West outing on Aug. 1st.
(what could be easier, from a miniatures’ proposition point of view – than one Warlord base of 2-strips, making a game maneuver element – each stand a game Bn./Rgt.)
