We were honored to have Jim Long US Rep of Ares Games at our October Game Day West. It was especially exciting for him to run Quarter Master General 1914 their grand strategic game system of the First World War.
Jim brought along his convention demo set and we were treated to seeing the jumbo size map, playing pieces and markers for this fast playing game system.

A good description of the game comes from the Boardgame Geek Website so I will pass that along here.
“Quartermaster General: 1914 is the next title in the critically acclaimed Quartermaster General series by Ian Brody and creates a narrative of the First World War in Europe, reflecting the military, technological, and social changes that occurred over the following four years.”

“In Quartermaster General: 1914, each card has two different uses: one when played, and another when prepared. On your turn, you have the opportunity to both play and prepare a card. You can also spend cards to draft more troops, or use cards to attrition your opponents. However, your deck represents your overall resources, so moving too quickly through your deck early might result in your unsupported armies being swept away in the final rounds of the game. This is worth it if you can capture Berlin or Paris in 1915, but if your gambit fails, you may have a tough road ahead.“

“The game ends after 17 rounds of play, or earlier if one side has a commanding lead..”

The game on Saturday saw the German’s move quickly and forcefully on France with one territory after another occupied by the gray land armies. Britain, the US and France all built fleets, but they seemed to not be helpful in the battle beyond securing the coastline. Russia moved to solidify it’s position and options in the East building army after army eventually working a backdoor approach to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
All in all a good game and one that we will certainly be adding to our group’s enlarged and enhanced board games (one is on the way now) both for our game days but also for use by our Education Working Group as we continue our school and public outreach.
Thanks to Jim for running this great looking and fun demo game. We also would like to offer our Thanks to all the players who came out to enjoy a fun afternoon of gaming. As always we extend our ongoing appreciation to Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support.

Big Muddy Historical Game Alliance of Greater St. Louis
Our public educational demonstrations including rules and game evaluation sessions use historical miniature and historical board gaming to explore military history, historical decision-making, and the people, places, and events of the past.
Historical Gaming in Action is a public educational program presented by the Big Muddy Historical Game Alliance of Greater St. Louis.
Using miniature figures, terrain, maps, historical research, and guided play, our games explore military history through the decisions faced by commanders, soldiers, and communities. Visitors can examine the table, ask questions, learn about the historical setting, and—when space and time permit—join the game.
Our scenarios are based on historical sources. While game rules simplify some details for practical play, each event is designed to encourage discussion of historical events, geography, leadership, logistics, strategy, and the human experience of conflict.
Historical gaming can be both enjoyable and educational. Big Muddy provides public educational demonstrations, seminars, and convention programming that promote historical miniature gaming and military history.
