Gaming in the Public Space

A reminder that our gaming in the public space is a both a hopefully enjoyable experience and our most valuable means to grow our gaming community. It is therefore important that we be certain that our appearance to others who may visit with us or engage in any fashion are left with a positive impression if we are to keep our hobby vibrant.

Great terrain, beautiful miniatures and fantastic scenarios are all important to that first impression, but equally important are players who are engaged and enjoying themselves. Gaming is competitive by nature and the “moment’ may cause us to say something or do something that not only detracts from the game but from our long established friendships. You are urged to think how something will be perceived before you say it and what the other person might be dealing with in the world beyond the game table.

Let’s not attract potential new players with great looking presentations only to push them away with unnecessary

ill-considered words or tension.

It is our hobby and let’s enjoy it together.

Flu Season

Just a reminder that the seasonal flu shots are available and that taking care of yourself is always a good idea.

Semi Regular Retirees Game 8/31/23 LaSalle

by Kevin Fitzpatrick

Thanks to Kurt Linke for presenting this superb game of LaSalle today. It was a challenging game for us French (Steve Lowry and myself) as we engaged the Russo-Austrian alliance (Bob Clark and Pat Lewis). Good to see Mark, Ravi and Mike stop by for a visit. Results were a  French victory albeit a very narrow one.

Big Muddy September Game Day 9/2/23

Once again lots of great games and lots of folks there to move miniatures and roll those dice. Our highest Game Day attendance ever! Which we owe to the efforts of our superb cadre of GMs and to our players.

What a Great Day of Gaming at our Big Muddy August Game Day! We had four full tables of games and lots of good times. A Sincere Thank You to our GMs Dave Schaffner (Beyond Normandy),Mark Lueckenhoff (Sicily 1943) and John Nozka (Bolt Action, Poland 1939), Thanks to Burt Campbell for his help with the Hail Caesar Micro Learn to Play game and to Mark Johnson for his assistance with the hosting duties for the day.

Our appreciation to the excellent staff at Miniature Market Retail Superstore for their assistance and to all the players who joined us today including the new folks who stopped by then joined in the fun.

AARs & pics were posted to the Facebook Page, but for those who may have missed them or don’t use FB here we go…

Sicily After Action Report:

by Mark Lueckenhoff

Our Invasion of Sicily game was pretty historically correct, but with a few major differences. The biggest was the weather, which which was too poor for airpower to be used in the first few turns, as well as the crucial last turn when the Axis should have been vulnerable to air assault while evacuating units from Messina to the toe of Italy. That die roll of 1 required for poor weather came up on five of the nine rolls. During the good weather, timely Axis interceptions repeatedly saved their bacon.

The British offensive was slowed from the start when their 1st Parachute Brigade was wiped out in the initial struggle for Syracuse. Things went better for the 82nd Airborne at Niscemi, but repeated Axis counterattacks and withdrawals caused it to change hands repeatedly all throughout the game. Fortunately, the amphibious operations had very few losses and has many early successes that allowed the quick establishment of supply dumps..

The Axis did a good job of bottling up the eastern coast road with gradual withdrawals and frequent counterattacks. There was a long, drawn out fight for Syracuse, which frequently falls in the first turn. The Americans made better progress as they battled northwest toward Palermo. Just as they reached the outskirts, a perfectly timed amphibious assault took the port. It was a good thing for them that it succeeded so quickly, because  part of the Herman Goering Division had just planted itself in their rear!. Without the timely capture of the port, large numbers of American units would have been cut off from their supplies and taken horrendous losses. Instead, the Americans could draw supplies from Palermo and thereby cut off supplies to all the Italian troops in the far western part of the island. They would quickly “wither on the vine.” The defense was doomed by that point, but able to make an orderly withdrawal across the straits before the game ended. That gave them enough victory points to claim a clear game victory.

In terms of actual losses, the Allies lost five units, which would represent slightly less than three divisions. The Germans lost a similar number, plus numerous Italian units. Although the Italian took heavy losses, their constant resistance and sacrificial counterattacks slowed down the Allies just enough to allow the evacuation.

This was probably our last game with this stylized board. Pat Lewis it constructing a new three dimensional version which, as you’d expect, is shaping up to be a real masterpiece. We’ll definitely have to play it again on the new board!

Beyond Omaha AAR

by Dave Schaffner

My Beyond Omaha scenario played this last Saturday, was a deep-dive sample of some of the early infantry combat fought in June 1944, in Normandy France.  The situation was based upon the immediate days following the initial landings, as the Americans began pushing out of the Omaha Beachhead.  It was also the first major action fought by the green US 2nd Infantry Division (Indianhead), after it began arriving as reinforcement over the beaches, and started pushing southward into the heavier bocage country ahead.  The game was a faithful recreation of this initial phase of skirmishing, as the 3rd Bn., US 9th Infantry Regiment encountered German screening forces attempting to impede its effort to expand southward, but before the Germans were able to establish solid defensive lines in the thick Norman terrain.

The German unit involved in the scenario was an interesting formation – elements of Schnelle Abteilung 517, part of the Schnellen Brigade 30, a Wehrmacht Erstaz (replacement) unit that had been formed in France, and was used in anti-partisan duty/patrolling (mostly as bicycle troops)   This formation was subsequently deployed around the western coast of Normandy, mid-way up the Cotentin peninsula, and reflected one of the few, immediate reserve units that could be deployed to the invasion coast on the first days of combat.  The Schnelle-Abt. 517 contained some interesting ‘heavy’ weapons, Ersatz conversions in themselves, built from captured French vehicles – lt. Panzerjager SPs, and with French halftracks.  This set the stage for the game – with green American infantry facing off against German ersatz troops, and arguably before either was ready to do battle – but battle they would.

The game has been played twice now, and I think the players enjoyed the scenario each time – it’s not a game level or combat style presented much anymore.  I enjoy working up the terrain, units, and doing all the original research for these types of games – no better way to test and refine ones knowledge of history.  Unfortunately, we don’t get to play in-depth engagements much anymore, which exercises the tactical knowledge of players, but as a game host, and being aware of this, there’s always a need to make scenarios accessible too.  My current presentation philosophy is to go heavy on game immersion (nice models and terrain), but make the rules and gameplay approachable – I think it’s a formula mix that can pay dividends, whether on a game day or at a con.

Hail Caesar Micro

by Kevin Fitzpatrick

After Action Report for The “Hail Caesar” Micro Learn to Play game at our September monthly game day which saw Eddie Mosley, Pete Palmer (Saxons) vs Tom Stevenson & Burt Campbell (Vikings) moving my homemade card-stock units as they formed up to do battle. The Saxons started a bit dispersed but, moved as quickly as they could to form up and engage with a couple of units that had archers. The Vikings pushed into contact as fast as possible, but not before taking a few hits from the Saxons. Once contact was made the Vikings pressed hard on the enemy line and neither Pete nor Eddie were having any luck with the dice. The day went to the Vikings, but I am sure we will see a rematch along the way.

Semi Regular Retirees Game LaSalle 9/14/23

by Kevin Fitzpatrick

Our Semi Regular Retirees Game this week at Miniature Market Retail Superstore on Manchester Road in St. Louis, was another visit to the age of the military tailor as Kurt Linke treated us to a gift of LaSalle. The French (Steve Treatman and Kevin Fitzpatrick) came up short as the Austrians (Ravi Rai and Mark Johnson) did a number on us despite our spiffy uniforms and well drilled marching

Defense Point nr. 54: Bolt Action 1st Edition (modified) by Warlord Games. The German invasion of Poland is progressing rapidly.  The new German style of warfare, blitzkrieg, is a surprise to the Polish Army and it is trying to deal with the onslaught.  Hopefully, years of fortification building along the Polish frontier with Germany will be able to slow down German progress in key places.  While Panzer elements make progress towards Naklo, a German Infantry Battalion has been dispatched to investigate a Polish defensive position near Sepolno. The Poles manning Defensive Point nr. 54 have heard the reports on the radio of the rapid advance and have been waiting in anticipation of the appearance of German troops in their area.  Will they be able to slow down or even stop the German advance? MINIATURE SCALE: 20mm (2-6 players). John Nozka GM

Table Four

Bring out yer Dead – Battle Masters goes Medieval: Milton Bradley/Games Workshop ): Modified for Medieval tactics. Themed on the battles fought during the Hundred Years War, a fun, easy-play variant of the 1992 Battle Masters game commences, as the echo of steel hitting shields resounds across the tabletop! WWI Over the Trenches – Air Combat in the Great War 1917:  Rules by Eric Hotz. It’s 1917 and the war grinds on. Today the German High Command has ordered an attack on the British lines. German reconnaissance aircraft escorted by fighters will spot for the artillery barrage. Meanwhile a British patrol just happens to be in the area. A determined dogfight ensues between the two belligerents. MINIATURE SCALE: 1/72 (4-12 players). Terry Callahan GM

Table Seven

Samurai Adventure in 28mm: Ninjutsu! In a town on the border, where strange deals are made and no one is quite as they seem, the Princess of Ninjas has a mission to unravel a dastardly secret and sabotage Lord Hashimoto’s plots against her liege. Join us on a half-skirmish half-roleplaying adventure into the bandit-ridden spy-infested edges of Samurai society! MINIATURE SCALE: 28mm (3-12 players). Tom Vielott GM

Table Eight

Is This Good Ground? The 2nd American Civil War: Fistful of TOWs 3 by Paul Minson & Ty Beard. In this alternative history, the Confederate States of America fought the United States to a standstill. The U.S. negotiated an end to the war and the newly formed country was named the Dixie States of America.  The two countries existed side by side from the end of the war until the year 2000.  A multitude of little issues built up until the U.S. had had enough and struck the Dixie States western territories by slicing down the Mississippi River toward New Orleans.  In the east, The Dixie States decided to launch its own offensive by striking north toward Washington DC to force the U.S. to pull forces from the west to reinforce the east.  The venerable Army of Northern Virginia moved north through Maryland and into Pennsylvania mirroring the 1863 move toward Gettysburg.  The U.S. Army of the Potomac quickly moved to block the advance and last night, reconnaissance forces found the Army of Northern Virginia and preparation for battle has begun. MINIATURE SCALE: 1/285th – Micro Armor (2-8 players). Adam Jones GM

Command Con Lite Session Two 5:00PM – 9:PM

Table One

Unassigned as of 09/10/23

Table Two

The Battle of Brandywine 1777: Great and Glorious Days (Home Rules). It is the early fall of 1777 the Revolutionary War is in its second year.  The British, angry after the defeats of Trenton and Princeton the previous winter, have decided to attack the capital Philadelphia and put an end to this annoying rebellion.  Washington moves his army south and blocks the British advance at Chadd’s Ford the only crossing point of the Brandywine River on the road to Philadelphia. MINIATURE SCALE: 15mm (2-6 players). Steven King GM

Table Three

Unassigned as of 09/10/23

Table Four

Onward to Stalingrad: Jagdpanzer 2nd Edition by Jagdpanzer. The 4th Panzer Army is on the Southwestern approaches to Stalingrad.  Colonel-General Hoth has directed the lead elements to press forward as rapidly as possible.  Russian resistance has been negligible since crossing the Don—it appears the Germans will quickly take Stalingrad and the Caucasus and end the war before Christmas 1942. The Russians screening Stalingrad from the Southwest might have something to say about this. This will be a meeting engagement at the company level of the lead elements. MINIATURE SCALE: 15mm (2-4 players). Ray Gluck GM

Table Five

The Great Turkey Hunt: One Hour Skirmish Wargames Rules by Pen & Sword Publications. It is the French & Indian Wars. Your unit after a long days march has been assigned the task of finding tonight’s dinner for the officer’s mess out in the woods over there. Get “cracking” and track down those turkeys. Kevin Fitzpatrick GM

Table Six

Wilson’s Creek: Black Powder Epic Scale by Warlord Games American Civil War.

On August 9th the Union army was camped a short distance from the Confederate camp at Wilson’s Creek. The Union plan was simple: a dawn attack on the Confederates from the front, but also by a detached force to their rear – a hammer and anvil.

MINIATURE SCALE: 15mm (2-4 players). Ed Gray GM

The Polish lines are stretched thin and the Polish Army was caught off guard. Propaganda was key for the Germans to justify the invasion and untie the ethnic Germans in Poland.  A Panzer column has rapidly advanced deep into Polish territory and has stopped to refuel, allowing the infantry to catch up. A key Wehrmacht film maker does not wish to miss out on the action & is hastening to get to the front. However, the Polish Army has gathered a small force to stage a counterattack hoping to prevent the link up. 2-6 players

August After Action Reports (AARs)

Big Muddy August Game Day 8/5/23

WOW! What a Great Day of Gaming at our Big Muddy August Game Day! We had five full tables of games and lots of good times. A Huge Thank You to our GMs Adam Jones (Luftwaffe 1946), Douglas Hedley (Cruel Seas), Harry Borchardt (Pike & Shotte), David Harrison (Latvia 1944) for presenting us with some challenging scenarios. Thanks to Tom Vielott for handling our overflow game of Wings of Glory at the Big Muddy Flying School.

In an unusual twist this was likely the first time we had an almost complete turnover in players in mid game. The family group playing in Doug’s Cruel Seas scenario, needed to leave and he recruited enough players from those about to fill all the slots allowing the game to continue to it’s conclusion.

Our appreciation to the excellent staff at Miniature Market Retail Superstore for their assistance and to all the players who joined us today including the new folks who stopped by then joined in the fun.

Semi Regular Retirees Game Black Powder Sudan 8/3/23

by Kevin Fitzpatrick

Our Semi Regular Retirees Game this week at Miniature Market Retail Superstore on Manchester Road in St. Louis, was The Battle of Shaikan, 5th November 1883 in 6mm using Black Powder Rules. This was my first time running these rules and the scenario straight out of the Blood on the Nile book seemed like a good place to start. Thanks to William Doelling, Steve Treatman (Egyptians), Mark JohnsonStephen Lowry and Patrick Lewis (The force of the Mahdi) for playing. I don’t think the Egyptians ever won one initiative roll and had some bad luck with the Ferocious Charge Rule allowing the Forces of the Mahdi to hit hard on their charges, but some battalion squares held up to terrible beatings.

Semi Regular Retirees Nimitz: Battle of the Java Sea 8/10/23

By Kevin Fitzpatrick

Battle of the Java Sea today using Nimitz rules at Miniature Market Retail Superstore on Manchester Road in St. Louis for our Semi Regular Retiree’s Game. It is a tough slog for the Allied team of Bill and Pat, but they did get some ships off the table. Mark, Steve and Ravi running the IJN did beat up the Allied forces with some well placed hits.

Wednesday Night Gaming Nimitz: Battle of the Java Sea 8/16/23 By Kevin Fitzpatrick

A re-run of the previous week’s Semi Regular Retiree’s game at Fantasy Books & Games in O’Fallon, Illinois with a good crowd. The ABDA forces added a twist with maneuvering their main body & some DD’s first to their port side and then turning towards their exit point. The IJN moved their three forces to stop the Allied movement. First small guns and then the few large guns exchanged “pleasantries”. In the end all Allied Cruisers were sunk except Exeter. The Nachi took a well placed torpedo from a Dutch DD and several IJN DDs had preceded her leaving the game due to various damage. Overall a good time and great to see some new and familiar faces. I will certainly return to join the group running a game in the next quarter.

Semi Regular Retirees BattleGroup  8/17/23

By Kevin Fitzpatrick

A big Thank You to Doug Hedley for presenting this fascinating mid war Eastern Front scenario. The Russians under Pat & Steve T. gave our German forces a tough time Ravi & Tom both scored some hard hits on the Soviets but our side was let down by my poor dice rolls generating orders for our team which in turn kept us from gaining any momentum. The Order of Lenin was bestowed to the brave Soviet armored car crew who risked life and limb to charge over the bridge in the center of the table but held fast despite repeated hits from German units. They will be available for the ceremony if their vehicle ever gets unpinned.

Semi Regular Retirees 1812  & Nimitz 8/24/23

By Kevin Fitzpatrick

Hot temps outside and hot gaming at Miniature Market. Thanks to Pat Lewis for bringing out his wonderful Jumbo 3D version of this super board game. Good to see Pat Conway, Jim Borshart, Marty Gallo, Ravi Rai, Andrew Biedenstein, Steve Treatman & Bill Doelling playing today. Also good to see Greg Dieckhaus, his son & Chris Ketcherside stop by to visit. (My apologies for any name misspellings.)

In both games the day went to those rascally British although the Americans in the 1812 game gave a good account of themselves doing much better than our previous game where if I recall correctly the Royal forces were moving steadily south towards Cuba. The Nimitz game saw Steve Treatman (Allies) taking on the German Navy (Bill Doelling) and doing a fine job of stripping away the Tirptiz’s escorts sending the Admiral Scheer, Admiral Hipper and 6 Destroyers to Davy Jones locker for the loss of only two DDs.

The British carrier HMS Illustrious has limped into Grand Harbor, Malta after being damaged by air attack while protecting a Mediterranean convoy.  The Italians attempted to hit the carrier yesterday with mixed results.  Hits were observed on the carrier but 3 bombers and three escorting fighters were shot down by a combination of a mixed bag of British fighters and heavy AAA fire.  The newly arrived Germans now take their turn at the docked carrier. 2-7 players

Big Muddy July Game Day 7/1/23

Gettysburg 160 by Dave Schaffner

“Thanks to Jim B., Dave H., Craig S., and Steve T. for engaging – Gettysburg 160 – the 1st day of the battle fought west of the town, and on the anniversary of the battle 160 years later.

Princeton by Steve King

At the end of 1776 and at the beginning of 1777, the fortunes of the colonial army were at a low point.

Washington desperately needed a moral boosting victory to keep his army together.

Trenton at Christmas 1776 was a good start, but Princeton in January 1777 was intended to be better.

Outnumbered by the better trained British regulars at Trenton, Washington planned to outflank the British and attack their supply base at Princeton. While on the march to Trenton a small British force spotted Washington’s army on the march to Princeton. They turned around to attack the colonials in the flank and on the march. A small brigade of colonials was dispatched by Washington to destroy a bridge over the river on the road to Princeton. This force would be the first to engage the British regulars. This is where our game on July 1st began.

The British players decided to be very aggressive, and advanced rapidly to try and catch the Colonials in march column before they could deploy. This would be a game winning tactic; the Colonials were unable to use their overwhelming advantage of numbers to attack the British lines.

The first Colonial brigade was driven from the field with great loss.

Several charges were made at the front of the column, which the Colonials fell back from, ultimately becoming unformed and then routed. The Marylanders eventually stood and gave the charging British a volley, which checked the charge. The ensuing close range volleying led to mutual destruction.

By now the two leading brigades were taking major losses and were beginning to fall back in confusion.

Washington tried to stop the rout with some success, but the colonials were running out of steam.

The British were also suffering heavy losses.

The victory conditions for this game were very simple. The British had to kill or capture George Washington. The Colonials had to drive the British from the field with heavy losses.

Historically Washington was everywhere on the day, rallying and encouraging his troops to take the fight to the heavily outnumbered British. At one point it was feared he had in fact been killed, hence the victory conditions for this game.

At the end of the 4 hours of play both sides agreed they did not have enough troops in good order to continue the fight and the British could not get near enough to George Washington to kill of capture him.

All the players enjoyed the game and had a lot of fun. They also felt the rules worked well and gave a good feel to the conflict of the period.

Semi Regular Retirees Game Wings of Glory 7/6/23

A good time playing Wings of Glory with Pat, Mark, Bill, Steve and Ravi today. My German bomber tried hard but succumbed to the

coordinated attacks of the Allies. Thanks to all that made it to fly the skies over no-man’s land.

Semi Regular Retirees Game Blood Red Skies 7/13/23

By Kevin Fitzpatrick

It was a good time playing today in Doug Hedley’s Blood Red Skies Mini Campaign Game. Great to see Pat Lewis, David Harrison (my excellent fighter escort commanders) and Keith Stuckmeyer & Steve Treatman (the rascally RAF pilots bent on the destruction of my peaceful JU-52 Iron Annie’s carrying baking supplies along with a renown pastry chef to boost the morale of our beleaguered troops).

Our Luftwaffle mission (even unknown to the GM) was to fly across the table to the drop point and unload our pastries and chef to the waiting troops. Both Keith & Steve managed to knock down one each of the supply transports, but the one carrying our leading pastry chef was able to make the target. David flying FW190s did a great job engaging Steve Treatman to my right taking out one Spitfire, then another breaking up that attack. Pat with the Me109s likewise did great work in peeling off some of the party favors that Keith was planning on directing my way. It was truly unfortunate that we lost the two Iron Annies, but ship “B” did manage to score a couple of hits against Keith and it’s gunner will be mentioned in dispatches posthumously.

Remember our Luftwaffle motto “essen sie iher sie sind so hell und flaumig” (Eat Yours, They are so bright & fluffy!)

Keith Stuckmeyer added, “A very fun game!  I was hoping to claim a victory over the pastry chef, but it was not to be.

Semi Regular Retirees Game LaSalle 7/20/23

By Kevin Fitzpatrick

It was both and interesting and enjoyable afternoon in the age of the military tailor as we played LaSalle in 6mm hosted by Kurt Linke. The rascally Russo-Austrian Alliance (Steve Treatman & Pat Lewis) held firm on their positions as our valiant French (Mark Johnson, Chris Ketchersides & Your Truly attempted to wrestle it away from them. Much 6mm resin blood was spilled in the effort. Steve was the handling his Russian Cavalry adeptly on the right engaging our left under Mark Johnson causing us more than a few headaches. Mark was able to take out a artillery battery in a heroic charge and Chris did a great job of maneuvering on our Right engaging with considerable elan! It was a slog in the middle but one that culminated in a fateful charge that did not go as well as our hopes would have had it do so. We hope to see Kurt running another game of LaSalle soon as we all had a great time.

Barracks Battles Gaming After Action Reports

Barracks Battles @ DieCon is in the books for 2023! It was a superb weekend of gaming at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, IL.  The Board of Big Muddy Historical Miniatures Gaming Alliance would like to extend our appreciation to Jon Bancroft and the staff of the convention along with our great team of Game Masters who made the tabletops alive with action. So a tip of the Big Muddy hat to David Harrison, Keith Stuckmeyer, Ed Gray, Harry Borchardt, Les Hostetler, James Kantor, Stephen Lowry, Ray Gluck, Alex Gluck, Adam Bortner, John Nozka, Terry Callahan, Tim Spakowski, Tom Vielott, Steve King, Ray Runge and Adam Jones, who all worked hard to present us with some top quality, beautifully crafted scenarios. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Terry Callahan sends us this report of his game..

I ran a Check Your 6! game called the Visitor at Diecon 2023. The following is a recap of the game. We had six players flying the RAF jets while I piloted the Visitor.

An unidentified radar blip appeared on the early warning radar screens at RAF Fylingdales. A pair of Lightning F6 fighters was launched to intercept and identify. As they closed, they saw a disc shaped object like nothing they have seen before. As they got closer a beam of light shot from the object in their direction. Believing themselves to be under attack the Lightings engaged and radioed for assistance.

The first attack was the last in the first game. One of the newly arrived F6 fighters launched a radar guided missile at the object. A direct hit destroyed the disc shaped ship sending it plunging into the North Sea. The game lasted a short three turns. Two players did not get into the game Later we noted that the player did not roll a lock on for his missile.

A second game was restarted with the 3rdand 4th players starting the game in positions one and two.

The game progressed with much maneuvering by both sides. Several missiles were fired (after gaining missile lock-on) at the UFO missing each time or doing no damage. The RAF jets soon learned that the flying saucer could only shoot along the six hex axis’. Positioning themselves in the blind spots each turn they mostly evaded the beam weapons of the stranger. One unlucky RAF Lighting was shot down soon after it arrived. Later another F6 was hit damaging its engine. Another F6 was out of missiles and exhausted its ammunition for its long-range heavy cannon. The game was called when we ran out of time. The Visitor was unable to escape while the RAF F6 Lightnings were unable to damage the Visitor.  The game was declared a draw.

June After Action Reports

June 8th Nimitz @ Miniature Market Manchester Road

by Kevin Fitzpatrick

A relaxing and enjoyable afternoon as we fought the Battle of The Java Sea in 1/6000 scale using Nimitz rules. Pat Lewis & Steve Lowry teamed up to take the IJN into the fray against a mixed force of Australian, Dutch, British and American cruisers and destroyers. Things seemed to be going well for the Allied forces under Doug Hedley and Keith Stuckmeyer  as they swung to their starboard trying to isolate Steve’s two groups. Broadsides exchanged and a critical hit saw a Japanese DD leave the game in a flash of a magazine explosion. The weight of fire was tough for the DDs out there on both sides and Doug almost pulled off an escape to the North to disrupt the IJN landings, but Pat and Steve rolled some amazing torpedo hits on the last turn. Four 6s in a row and the best laid plans were dashed as Allied Cruisers slipped beneath the waves. A few pics are on Facebook.

Thanks to Doug for bring the ships and planning the scenario. Thanks to Pat for making the range sticks which worked out nicely. Thanks to Steve and Keith for refreshing my memory on some of the rules, running 15 games of One Hour Skirmish at the convention this last weekend caused a couple of memory hiccups.

June 14th Action Under Sail @ Fantasy Books & Games, O’Fallon, IL

by Steve Lowry

This past Wednesday in O’Fallon we fought the Battle of the Chesapeake using Action Under Sail rules.  Having the weather gage, the British tried to close with the French to get a decisive result that would allow them to get control of the Chesapeake Bay and save the British in Yorktown.  However this caused them to sail into the French guns and they paid the price, especially the HMS Ajax with 28% crew loss.  Losses were British 623 crew, 26 gun batteries and 20 sails.  French losses were 462 crew, 29 gun batteries and 6 sails.  This showed the French concentrating on the British sails while the British aimed at the gun batteries/hull.  Toward the end of the battle, the British cutoff the French flagship Paris with three of their own ships, trying to overwhelm it but they may have bitten off more than they could chew.  The results were fairly historical.

Thanks to Ray, Dave, Terry , Adam and Craig for playing.

June 15th Blood Red Skies @ Miniature Market Manchester Road

It was a mellow game of Blood Red Skies today for our Semi Regular Retiree’s Game. Start of a mini campaign hosted by Doug Hedley. Tom Stevenson and I barely protected the honor of the LuftWaffle against those rascally British pilots commanded by Pat Lewis and Doug Hedley later relieved by Steve Treatman after his arrival. Good to see Ravi stop by for a minute and nice to chat with Michael during and after the game. See you all next week as we take to the “friendly” skies once again.

June 17th Shiloh Fistfull of Lead Bigger Battles

A run through of a scenario that we will see in the not too distant future at one of our Monthly Game Events. Keith Stuckmeyer, Chuck Hanson, Ray Gluck, John Nozka & Kevin Fitzpatrick gathered to try out an ACW battle hosted by Steve Lowry. While not wanting to give away too much we can safely say that it is a good looking fast playing  game. The Confederate Cookies were a hit with both sides as rations for the troops and the Rebels will have to do a better job of placing their HQ so as not to be stepped on.

June 21st The Sword & The Flame @ Fantasy Books & Games, O’Fallon, IL

by Dave Murvhill

From: Captain Cunningham, 2/24th Regiment of Foot

To: General Blackson, Chief of Supply, Durban

Subject: Report of action on 8 April 1879

Sir:

While carrying out your orders to deliver troops and supplies to the main army in Natal province my command was assaulted by a Zulu army. Although my scouts tripped the ambush before we found ourselves in extremis there were simply too many Zulus for us to defeat them all. I should note that the Natal Native Contingent were particularly ineffective, the cavalry quitting the field without taking a single casualty.

B company acted as rear guard and took over three quarters casualties doing so. C company acted bravely, fending off one assault after another and suffered minor casualties. The NNC abandoned the cattle on the field and we had to unload the supplies from the wagons to carry our wounded.

Allow me to express the 24th Regiment officers mess’s desire for revenge. I understand the Zulu kraal that performed the attack has been identified, perhaps a punitive expedition is in order?

Very respectfully submitted,

Ritchie Cunningham

June 22nd Blood Red Skies @ Miniature Market Manchester Road

The mini campaign continued today with some players twisting and turning to gain advantage over their opponents.  The skies were blood red and black with all that British AA fire! Our always friendly Luftwaffle (Tom Stevenson, Mark Johnson & myself) attempted to make a few deliveries to our British cousins (Steve Lowry, Steve Treatman & Pat Lewis) at their airfield and storage tank facility only to be rebuffed in our attempts.  How ruuuuuuude!

Mark arrived first to extend pleasantries and did out maneuver one of Steve Treatmans planes causing all sorts of ruckus at the airfield. I arrived with some JU88s the next turn to find myself under close escort by Steve Lowry’s Spitfires, only to discover he was shooting at me….. Next Tom Stevenson brought in a mixed group of Me110s and proceeded to arrive at the oil storage facility unmolested besides dodging the flak, eventually destroying the target.  Tom was the Luftwaffle player of the day bringing in the most points for our side. Mark did his darnedest to keep the Spits off of the bombers but there were just too many of them and unfortunately our JU88s succumbed to the numbers (but I did get a hit from a rear gun on Steve).

Important Note

Miniature Market has posted a Code of Conduct in their game room and for those who have not seen it onsite or on our facebook page I will share it here as an FYI to all.

*******Code of Conduct*******

1). Have Fun!

Just not at the expense of others.

2). Keep Calm & Play On

Malicious, violent, or bullish behavior will not be tolerated.

3). Keep it Clean!

Pick up after yourself. Put things back where they belong or where you found them.

4). Respect

For others, their property, their space and yourself.

a). Don’t touch people or stuff that isn’t yours without asking.

b). Contain your game: Don’t infringe upon other gamer’s play space.

c). Respect your body, mind and spirit: regular bathing, proper hygiene, hydration and rest are more important than gaming!

5). Language

This is a “family-friendly” space.

a). A swear word may slip from out here and there, but rude speech will not be tolerated.

b). Leave divisive discussions (religion, political, etc) at the door. There is a time and place and this isn’t it.

If all else fails: See Rule #1!

Additional Thoughts

by Kevin Fitzpatrick

It’s nothing dramatic, but comes down to simply using common sense, civility  and being respectful of others. As I and I am sure we all have learned through the years, it is not how the words are meant, it is how they are received. It is also important for us as a group gaming in this or any public space to be knowledgeable about perceptions of others. Our public gaming events are our best recruiting tools to increase the numbers of historical and table top gamers. A group that looks to be having fun, competing over a game table without being hyper-competitive will draw those with a similar interest to us and gives off a good impression. If we are to grow our group and hobby, we need to be mindful of how we are perceived by others in the public space and each of us is an ambassador for ourselves, our gaming community and our hobby. We work or sink together.

May Gaming After Action Reports

On Thursday May 4th

at Miniature Market Retail Superstore our

Semi Regular Retirees Game provided some

hot action in the Pacific with a scenario and ships provided by Pat Lewis. The USN was able at significant cost to turn back the Japanese bombardment group and the landings at Biak Island were safe from an intrusion from the seaward side. Again we found torpedoes are hard to get to hit, but when they do, the lighter ships tend to simply disappear in a poof. Gunnery was mixed as both sides had highs and lows. Tom Stevenson seemed to be on target consistently with his rolls much to the chagrin of Mark Johnson and Steve Treatman although the IJN landed some of those Long Lance torpedoes causing some pain to the US.  Ravi was new to the system but gave a good account of himself inflicting some pain on the IJN.

Thursday May 11th

saw our intrepid group playing Wings of Glory WWI .  It was a small group yesterday of Ravi, Mark, Steve and Kevin, but the action was pretty intense as the Central Powers proceeded on a recon mission behind the lines of the Allies. Ravi had a two seater, escorted by a Fokker Triplane facing off against Steve and his Nieuport 17 and Spad XIII . Mark joined in flying a Nieuport 28 and I came in with a Roland a couple of turns later. Lots of twists, turns and in the end Ravi had lost his escort, the Rumpler was having on by a thread but the Allies had lost two fighters and the Spad pilot (Mark at that point) elected to head home based upon what was left of his airplane.

Our Big Muddy May Game Day on Saturday the 13th

was a lucky one indeed with a good turnout playing a variety of games.

Mark Johnson

gives us this report on the action at his table…

“At Horseshoe Bend,  General Andrew Jackson inflicted grievous losses on the Redstick Creek faction.

After an initial ineffective artillery barrage, General Jackson launched his direct, frontal assault on the impressive Redstick Creek fortifications.

Surprisingly, the Redsticks abandoned their secure defenses, choosing to exchange musket and arrow fire in the open with US Regulars.  The Redsticks then swarmed the Second Battalion of the 34th Infantry, annihilating the soldiers after a long, costly melee.

The Redsticks noticed, but did not respond to the arrival of the Cherokee warband, and ignored pleas for help from their wives and children.   The non-combatants disappeared into the forest and reportedly most of them survived a harrowing swim down the frigid river.

Since the Redsticks did not react to the Cherokees in the village, the Cherokees plundered the stores of food, furs and fuel, then burned the buildings and huts.

Back in the fortifications, more and more Redstick warriors massed to cripple the First Battalion of the 34th Infantry and one of the East Tennessee Militia battalions.   But Redstick casualties were adding up, and the other East Tennessee Militia battalion was closing in.   The Redstick chieftain called upon his remaining warriors to disengage and they disappeared into the forest.

A few hundred Redstick warriors and most of their families survived, but they had lost their homes and supplies.   Alabama in Spring is cold and rainy.

General Jackson rallied his forces, noting the 34th Infantry Regiment was reduced to a few companies, and the East Tennessee Militia was hurting.  However,  the troops had a celebratory feast, and were comfortably warm in their bivouac.”

Dave Schaffner

sent along some great photos of his Bolt Action Burma game which are posted on our group Facebook page. Be sure to check them out.

Thursday May 18th

took us to ancient Rome as Hannibal brought his elephants to visit in a game of Hail Caesar. Ed Gray and Harry Borschardt offered us a sneak preview of their presentation for Barracks Battles less than a month away. No spoilers for this scenario to be found here, but there are a couple of pictures and a very brief AAR on our Facebook page.

Thursday May 25th

Venturing into the contemporary era and today’s news we had a game of Harpoon! modern naval combat.

A Big Thank You to Ravi for presenting this interesting and very timely scenario. Our USN and Taiwanese Task Group making an innocent freedom of navigation transit near the Spratly Island  came under missile attack by the PLA Coastal defenses leading to a bunch of twists and turns by the surface units as they attempted to evade the incoming “greetings’ to the neighborhood. Commodore Steve Lowry guided the Zumwalt, while Mark Johnson & Chris Ketcherside (later Keith Stuckmeyer) each controlled an Arleigh Burke with David Harrison joining in with a Taiwanese Coast Guard vessel. Pat Lewis was our Air Boss of the Helos and I valiantly ran the Seahawk flying ahead of the fleet. The missiles were flying and our ships were tossing out defensive fire as fast as they could roll the dice with most of the intruders knocked down. Pat Lewis got one with a helicopter chaff discharge and only one got through to hit the Zumwalt causing some severe damage. Feedback from the players was very positive and I have asked Ravi to run this scenario for an upcoming Monthly Game Day so keep your eyes out for that to be on tap.
