FaceBook Events Maps

 & Address Hiccups

Thanks to the members who have brought the current anomalies in event locations to my attention, it is much appreciated.  I have reported the incorrect maps to Facebook through their system, but I don’t expect much in the way of action from them. The event locations are listed above with the correct address and are also correct on the website. Yes, I get that it is a “pain in the backside” and confusing, but this is one of those things that is beyond our ability to control.

Recent After Action Reports

Semi Regular Retirees Game 02/29/24 Wings of Glory WWII

Mark Williams presented us with his modified version of WOG WWII through a Stuka attack on a target in Southern England. The Luftwaffe (Kurt L, Kevin F & Mark J) headed to the hapless target while the RAF (Steve T & Pat L) did their best to disrupt the planned strike.

Pat & Kevin were the first to exchange “pleasantries” in a head on attack of 1 Me109 vs two Hurricanes. The German fighter hit hard but the Hurricane hit a fuel tank and caused a fire on the 109. At this point Mark arrived to take over the Stuka’s while Kurt & Steve headed straight at one another.

Pat turned sharply to engage the dive bombers doing some damage but a lucky hit by the rear gunner of Stuka #1 returned the favor. Kevin looking hard for the fire extinguisher turned towards the flight path of the bombers while Kurt & Steve engaged in head on combat.

AA fire damaged the lead Stuka slowing it considerably while Kurt maneuvered to get behind Steve as he headed to the strike aircraft. Mark made adjustments to both altitude and speed trying to avoid collisions while Pat took what opportunities that presented themselves. Kevin continued to look for the fire extinguisher with damage racking itself up.

Mark lined up on the target despite the ground fire while Steve made his move only to find Kurt right behind him. Scott Lester stopped by and rolled to put out the fire on Kevin’s 109 only for it to be hit for three airframe boxes when there were only two left. It was hit the silk time for one pilot.

With some great flying by Mark the Stuka’s hit their targets while Kurt engaged Pat in a head on attack while chasing Steve.

The game drew to a close as the Stuka’s would head home on the deck, Pat’s two Hurricanes heavily damaged, Steve somewhat out of position and Kevin drifting downwards below his silk umbrella.

All in all an excellent outing for our group of pilots. Look for this game to be on the schedule for our March 23rd Game Day.

Wednesday Night Gaming at Fantasy Books & Games

Dave Murvihill sends in this after action report from the recent action at Fantasy Books & Games in Fairview Heights.

From: Ritchie Cunningham, captain 2/24th Regiment of Foot

To: General Blackson, Chief of Supply, Durban

Subject: Report of action on 9 June 1879

Sir:

Per your orders my force invaded Catchawacko’s territory on 6 June and met his tribe in battle in front of their kraal.  I am pleased to report a victory for Her Majesty.  Our rifle fire decimated the Zulu impis, with only two out of eight withdrawing from the battlefield in good order.

The highlanders performed up to their reputation, at one point facing down three impis in full charge. They and the NNC suffered light casualties. Unfortunately, the Naval Infantry were roughly handled when the Zulus attempted to outflank us, but successfully withdrew from the field with their wounded.

Regarding the Native cavalry, they performed much better than in April. They conducted a successful charge, then held our far flank. While I would still prefer traditional British cavalry, the NNC will make an acceptable substitute.

After the battle we searched the kraal for Her Majesty’s property, list provided separately, then burned it down. The Zulu remnants were last seen retreating to the north.

Very respectfully submitted,

Ritchie Cunningham

12 June 1879

Captain Cunningham:

Report received. Congratulations on a victory. Captain Hemsworth of the HMS Emerald states you owe him a case of scotch.

R,,

General Blackson

Dave’s Notes:

A typical battle when melee natives cross an open field against British regulars. Still, the first fire two of the British companies doubled their expected casualties, knocking two impis into critical morale.

The ambush was unexpected by the British player, but here’s a hint: when I describe terrain very carefully there’s probably a reason why. A scout on the board edge would have revealed the Zulus before they got on the British flank.

I forgot that troops withdrawn from a lost melee were shaken and required rally, but that’s on me.

Semi Regular Retirees Game 03/07/24 Plains Indian Wars & Godzilla Island

It was a two-fer today at Miniature Market Cave Springs. Pat hosted his big board Plains Indian Wars with Chris K & Mark W as the Native Americans vs Kurt L & Jamie M as the settlers pushing West. My understanding from the few views I got of the game were that it was a tight one leaning at the end to the (then) home team (the natives) by a few points.

The Transcontinental Railroad was completed quickly and in fine fashion which may have lead to the natives coming out on top as the game went a few turns short of what the settlers needed to win. A big Thank You to Pat for bringing this great looking game to our Thursday gathering.

On our second table we had the first run through of Godzilla Island (not to be confused with Gilligan’s temporary home) using Wings of Glory WWI & Tripods & Triplanes rules. The creature acquitted himself very well against the combined efforts of first four planes in the first scenario then eight in the second game.

Thanks to Steve T, Steve L, Mark J and Bill D for playing and their suggestions as to how to make improvements to the game which will be in the family section of Barracks Battles @ DieCon May 30 – June 1, 2024.

Semi Regular Retirees Game 03/14/24 Dawn of Iron

There was no pie to be had for our 3/14 outing at Miniature Market Cave Springs, but the gaming action was fast and furious. It was a rematch of our previous Dawn of Iron scenario by Greg D and this one proved to be just as challenging. The action started with the CSA (Steve T, Mark J & Tom S) coming on the table to make a break across the Union defenses of obstructions, shore batteries, and floating torpedoes (mines) heading to open water. Our gallant Union team of (Pat L, Steve Lowry & Bill D) headed into battle to prevent such an occurrence.

Luck initially favored the Union as a Confederate torpedo boat was sunk at the booms by some well place shots and things were looking good until the Rebel ironclads crossed the apparently water soaked floating mines with no damage incurred. Combined with some good solid hits from the forts that just bounced off their armor things took on a less cheerful note. Tom was up to his excellent usual dice rolling and scored some good hits on the Union craft. The boys in blue had less good luck with the cubic random number generators as Steve L will attest placing 4 straight spar torpedoes against Tom’s immobilized ship only to roll a series of “1s”.

The battle wrapped up with two of the Confederates escaping off the board and carrying their team to victory. They did lose all their torpedo launches, a tug and one ironclad. The US lost a couple of TimberClads along with other ships sustaining some heavy damage.

Semi Regular Retirees Game 03/21/24 General Quarters III Leyte Gulf

It was a good day of gaming at Miniature Market Cave Springs as Steve Lowry treated us to the General Quarters 3 version of his Leyte Gulf scenario.

The IJN ( Bill, John & Kevin) split into 3 forces of 2 BBs escorted by various numbers of destroyers. The US (Steve T & Mark with the heavy relief force) and Steve Lowry commanding Taffy 3 engaged made their way to engage.   The Aircraft rules were the same as we used in our previous Nimitz games in order to add a bit of flavor but not overpower the surface action aspects of the day. Steve had good luck rolling the number of strikes and did some damage to both the Kongo & Nagato slowing them down a bit. He also used smoke very effectively to keep the CVEs from getting hit by the IJN BBs.

John got a really good roll of 2 ones when firing the Yamato at a US Destroyer ending the career of that ship & captain and Kevin scored a couple of hits on the flattops from the Fuso group on the IJN right, starting a pesky fire in the hangar that kept rolling for damage control. Mark & Steve T made best possible speed towards the exposed Taffy 3 but the slow Battleships just couldn’t get close enough fast enough and it was the last turn before they had any chance at all to range in.

Taffy 3 landed a few well placed torpedos on the Nagato in the IJN center and a board of inquiry has been convened at the Japanese headquarters regarding torpedoing our own destroyer.

The game ended with a US victory as the CVE’s would certainly escape behind the smoke screen and the IJN was preparing to withdraw before the US BBs achieved effective range.

Thanks to Steve and the folks at Miniature Market Cave Springs for a fun afternoon.

March Game Day

It has been a good slice of time since our last monthly game day. Scheduling has been a challenge with the issues surrounding the Miniature Market Manchester relocation. Our stalwart GMs were not to be deterred and with the superb cooperation of the Staff of Miniature Market Cave Springs we were able to put together a superb event that was well attended by the members of our gaming community.

Leading off the line up was Mark Williams’ modified version of Wings of Glory WWII in a Battle of Britain scenario seeing a flight of Stuka dive bombers on a delivery mission in the UK. Me109s, Spitfires & Hurricanes all featured in the mix of the “friendly” skies.

Next in line was Dave Schaffer’s “Ork Skool Gaming” scenario using and enlarged BattleMasters game which he was able to run multiple times in the course of the afternoon.

Dave reports in his AAR

“At our monthly event this March, chaos reigned, as Battle Masters hit the table and waged war all afternoon.

Will P. and his friend specifically came to play, as Milton Bradley’s Battle Masters was one of their gateways into wargaming fond decades ago.

They both split a game victory, with much ebb and flow witnessed, fortunes rising and dying as the action cards played a fickle master (along with their die-rolling too…..Will). 😉

Our Big Muddy buddy Warren, who arrived late to the shop, having traveled a couple hours to attend the event, was happy to see Battle Masters keying up for its third go-around.

I even got to play the fourth game…….there was much March Madness, and good times!“

Next up to bat was Tim Lalk’s Napoleonic Skirmish using Fist Full of Lead rules as multiple groups of Austrians, French and Hungarians all tried to complete their assigned missions without running afoul of the other players goals and musketry.

Batting clean up was Burt Campbell’s Martians on the Marne scenario using All Quiet on the Martian Front Rules. We understand that it was a tough day to be an alien as the Kaiser’s troops when they were not shooting at the French were rolling some impossible to repeat dice against the visiting team from outer space.

All in all a great game day and we are back on track. Hope to see you all at our weekly games on both sides of the Big Muddy (check the calendar) and at our upcoming monthly events in April.

Semi Regular Retirees Game 03/28/24 The Battle of Concord

We time shifted a bit today from the planned Battle of Bunker Hill to the Battle of Concord, but nevertheless a great run through of Warlord’s Black Powder rules. A big Thank You to Ed Gray for presenting a fun afternoon of table top gaming as we refreshed ourselves with this fast playing system.

The British Command (Steve T and Kevin F in the first game) came across the bridge to clear out the Rebels (Steve L and Bill D) from the quiet hamlet and secure any caches of arms that might pose problems to the Soldiers of the Crown.

Initial deployment by Steve T went well with his regulars and leading company of Tories but Kevin’s forcers were less interested in joining the battle with rolls exceeding their command rating.

The first game went quickly as the colonists rolled exceptionally well and having back to back turns due to a good initiative roll pretty well cleared the field of the to lead British units.

We re-set and switched sides with similar results in game two.

In game three we toned down the militia units shooting capability retaining first fire for the colonial side and things came to a much more balanced conclusion.

Again a big Thank You to Ed for giving us a preview of his game for the upcoming Barracks Battles @ DieCon. As always our appreciation to the folks at Miniature Market – Cave Springs for graciously hosting our events.
