Gaming in the Public Space
Keeping Perspective
The games that we hope you enjoy attending at our numerous area-wide public events are only possible through the efforts of your fellow gamers, game masters and the organizing of the group. The GMs who spend time assembling the scenario, miniatures and accoutrements for the presentation do so out of a desire to offer you an entertaining few hours for which they bear all the expenses and efforts. It is a labor of love that they freely share to our collective gaming community.
We ask that as you chose to attend our events that you respect the efforts of the GMs to present to you an enjoyable escape and exercise gentlemanly decorum. Please recognize that the person who created the scenario and the ones across the table are all human and they all come with the same positives and less positives that you yourself do. They have issues in their lives and feelings just as you do. Sometimes the GM might have missed something, sometimes a rules interoperation isn’t what you believe should be the case, sometimes a player on your team or the other missed something, sometimes the dice rolls all come up 1’s, sometimes you misinterpreted the scenario objectives, sometimes we just foul up and stuff happens. None of these are reasons to be critical, raise voices, point fingers, create tension, grouse or be unpleasant. It is a hobby and it is supposed to be a relaxation for everyone involved at the table. It is just a game and if you didn’t do well today, you will get them next time. Let it go.
Recently we have seen occur a couple of game events that came up short of fulfilling the goal of being a good time for everyone there.
We have to collectively do better.
It’s nothing dramatic, but comes down to simply using common sense, civility and being respectful of others. As we all have learned through the years, it is not how the words are meant, it is how they are received. It is also important for us as a group gaming in this or any public space to be knowledgeable about perceptions of others. Our public gaming events are our best recruiting tools to increase the numbers of historical and table top gamers. A group that looks to be having fun, competing over a game table without being hyper-competitive will draw those with a similar interest to us and gives off a good impression. If we are to grow our group and hobby, we need to be mindful of how we are perceived by others in the public space and each of us is an ambassador for ourselves, our gaming community and our hobby. We work or sink together.
