Semi Regular Retirees Game 09/25/25 The Battle of Clontarf 23 April 1014

The troops mustered in at Miniature Market Rock Hill for a bit of a run through, work the kinks out of the scenario and learn the rules session featuring the Battle of Clontarf 1014 using One Hour Skirmish Ancients & Medieval Wargame Rules by John Lambshead.

Team Viking Jules R & Steve L took on Team Irish run by Pat L (later Dave B) and Mark J as the two sides clashed fighting for the future of Ireland.

Above we see the Vikings (triangle base markers) having crossed the small creek engaging in melee with their Irish counterparts (small rectangle base markers). Pennies designated the Irish warriors who still had a javelin in their possession. To the rear of the Irish line we see Murchad Mac Brian with a chit for a free card play as Brian Boru High King of Ireland (Muchad’s Father) had been praying off the game table for divine intervention.

The Irish right/Viking left is fully engaged while things on the other end of the battle are a bit more sedated. This may of course been to the timely (or untimely depending on your perspective) arrival of both Jokers and low value action point draws.

Murchad joins the battle causing some dismay for the Vikings.

A bit more of an aerial view.

Nearing the end of the game we broke for discussions on how to be modify the scenario and keep it both true to the history while creating a faster play that will be important for our upcoming October Game Day West and any of history class students that might be attending.

The game ended with a Viking win, but lots of great suggestions from the players that will hopefully increase balance, playability and maintain the historical flavor of the scenario. Many Thanks to all the players and of course to the fine folks at Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support.
