Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance – St. Louis Semi Regular Retirees Game  05/21/26 The Silver Train to Denver Part III

It was a continuation of our 1950s TV Western Campaign game using “Fistful of Lead Reloaded” 25mm figs that I picked up second hand over the last few years sprinkled with some trees, rocks, hills and things. Held at Miniature Market Rock Hill.

Word had gone our that The Connecticut Gang headed by desperado Steve Lowry was hold up at the cabin of Pierre the Fisherman hoping to get a boat to take the Wells Fargo Silver down river and escape.  Groups of 1950s TV Western Heroes had filtered in to Whitewash City and were now on their way to recover the silver and capture the gang.

Steve and Pat L had the Connecticut Gang with DJ taking charge of the Native American Allies. Tim L controlled Jim Hardie from Wells Fargo, Andrew B, Marshall Matt Dillion up from Dodge City. Nate R had to look up just who this Palladin guy was on his phone. Jay had the Range Rider’s team as they all headed in.

Desperado Steve Lowry driving the wagon over to the cabin, keeping a close eye on the silver.

Pat took his half of the gang and mounted the rocky hill near the cabin drawing a bead on the Dodge City Marshall as Andrew moved forward. Tim slipped up the other flank towards DJ’s Indians and both were met with a warm greeting. Nate and Jay went up the center which seemed to be the path of least resistance (at least for a little while)until they got more into range.

Pat L’s accurate fire and exceptional dice rolls devastated the approaching Dodge City contingent. Steve spent some time unloading the silver until the fight got just a bit too close for comfort and his rifle was needed on the line.

DJ’s Native Americans take to the hill to get ready for the approaching Wells Fargo Men (Tim).

The open ground on the approach to the hide out left the bounty hunters/lawmen exposed as they moved in and subject to unsustainable losses. The Connecticut Gang didn’t come out unscathed as there were many a wound and stunned marker about along with a few losses.

Our only melee as the Wells Fargo Man takes on an Indian with one wound.

Lots of laughs and fun seemed to be had by all with dice rolling into the tress more times than we can count. A call to weigh and measure the dice after the game came up as the outlaws seemed to have more luck than could be imagined. A hiccup by the GM gave one of the Connecticut Gang Traits of Dead Eye and Lousy Shot leading to some fun comments.

One of Steve’s figs out of ammo which seemed to be a standard for his group this game.

Thanks to Andrew playing then helping to run the game for a bit. A Thank You to all the players for taking time to join in and continued appreciation to Game Nite for their for their support.

Remember to shop local.

  1. This was quite a bit of fun even though the “good guys” appear to have come up on the short end. Excerpts from Lucas M’s post action report (from the perspective of my squad).

Lucas moved up with his group which included one of the ranch hands, a scout and a deputy. The group was a bit late and was advancing to the left of the Lowry gang’s compound looking to come around the flank. Ahead of the group was a Wells Fargo crew doing the same thing. On the right, Matt D. and another group were going to move up and see what they could do and if nothing else, at least distract the Lowry gang from our flanking attempt on the left.

This plan went quickly awry when gunfire broke out on the right. It appeared the Lowry gang was anything but being caught unaware. As Lucas moved up, he saw the Dillion group go to ground with several wounded and not moving. It was also hard to see what had happen to the gang members in return, but apparently not a whole lot.

Well, when things go bad, they go really bad as gunfire opened up in front of Lucas group. Apparently the Wells Fargo people had found something as well, except it wasn’t gang members, it was Indians. Lucas could see this was breaking down on a lot of levels and it wasn’t looking good. Hurrying his group up as fast as they could, they got into a stand of trees where they could see both the Lowry gang to the right and the Wells Fargo/Indians a bit ahead. There was a rocky rise of broken high ground and some Indians were on top of it along with the Wells Fargo people. Unfortunately, the Indians were getting the better of the Wells Fargo group, but also took some casualties.

Lucas decided to open up on the Indians first and being the rifleman he is, made a fine shot and brought down Chief Iron Bear. The deputy moved ahead to another clump of trees in an attempt to take advantage of the situation, but it looked like another Indian got the drop on him. The scout moved nimbly up over the rocks and appeared to surprise another Indian and was able to shoot him. Lucas and his ranch hand opened up on the stand where Steve Lowry was spotted along with some of the other group. Lucas knew he had missed, but apparently someone else had not and Steve was wounded. The other group had also been wittled down by the Lowry Gang as well and were down to 1 man left shooting.

Lucas observed Steve Lowry being carried to the cabin on the other side of the trees, so he figured Lowry was pretty injured and would not be going anywhere. He saw no other posse leaders except himself and given the situation, decided that while the Lowry gang may have won today, this was far from over.

    1. Great summary by Lucas McCain! Yes, that rascally Connecticut Gang won this one but it’s far from over……
