Our August Game Day West featured some superb games for the crowd that assembled at Miniature Market Rock Hill this first Saturday of the month. Across several historical (and a bit less historical) eras we saw games in a variety of scales and styles.
One of our three featured games was a 25mm Viking Raid scenario with some superbly painted miniatures and a table chock full of great looking buildings, longboats and booty to be plundered presented by Frank Copeland.
The scenario as described on our calendar was Viking Raid
and the day began with Bob A trying out for a role in the next Viking Saga with a helmet that Frank had brought along…..
Using “Lord of the Rings(LOTR)” rules: and 28mm with some Pillage rules thrown into the mix. Anglo Saxons vs Danes. Danes arrive on long ships. And so it begins… Frank Copeland GM
Frank was gracious enough to not only to present this intriguing scenario but also to submit some fine photos and and a report for us all to enjoy so we will let him offer you the details…..
“Viking Raid in North Umbria. VIKINGS vs Anglo Saxons 794 AD.”
“The Vikings(VIK) had a successful early recon effort in that most of the planted spies remained undetected. They supplied good intelligence as to the towns hidden resources. They also discovered a High Value target moving through the main road. This helped in determining their attack plan. The Anglo Saxons A/S discovered a few spies …and subsequently they were burned at the stake.”
“The action began in the early morning with night slowly losing its hidden shroud. The A/S rolled poorly to discover the oncoming Viking raiding fleet. The VIK hit from left right and center of the town. They used the interior river banks to screen A/S counter attacks. The right, left and center advance pillaged, game some treasure yet failed to retrieve some of the more lucrative items. The town folk actually put up a good bit of resistance.”
“The VIK strength overwhelmed the A/S defenders yet by the 7th turn the A/S had moved into the Center main road and began halting the VIK advance. A/S horse units began movement towards the battle putting pressure onto the VIK to either concentrate attack and capture the high value target/treasure or block and pillage more of the town they have secured. The A/S counterattacked by the river on smaller boats threatening the VIK escape. The VIK Beserkers and Huscarls where attacked by the Fighting monks and the freshly arrived Kings retinue and it was proving the that securing the real treasures towards the Church would leave there escape doubtful.”
“Ultimately no Viking Saga would be written for the Viking Raid yet they did render the Anglo Saxon Defenders without many of their warriors and picked up enough loot to secure a minor victory.”
