Semi Regular Retirees Game 07/03/25 Pirate Island

Our Thursday afternoon game was a trip back to the age of sail when Buccaneers sailed the Spanish Main in search of treasure as we ventured to Pirate Island using Song of Drums and Tomahawks rules by Ganesha Games with some modifications to allow for canons, boats and a stroll on the beach with Caribbean breezes.

The scenario found our Pirate Hero, Marty guiding his men (Pat L and Steve L) in defense of their island and the British (Jules R and Steve T) moved to put an end to their adventures and retrieve the vast riches that had been plundered.

Above Marty gives out encouragement to his trusty sailors.

The British team had to select an entry point before the game and then the Pirates deployed on the island not knowing from where they would be attacked. Above we see the Pirates having blocked one of the beach exits with bags and barrels.

On turn one the British arrived with two longboats full of soldiers and a small patrol boat to offer fire support. In this case the small sloop did some serious damage to the Pirates hold the beach exit on this side of the island.

Pirates moving along the rocky terrain to take a few long range shots at the Patrol Boat.

A bit later Mark J joined the Pirate team helping to defend the treasures.

Pirate Muskets were in some cases pretty accurate, disrupting the gun crews aboard the British Sloop.

Steve T takes his long boats around the end of the island engaging the forces in the rocky terrain in a give and take contest with Pat L putting one trooper out of action with a long range pistol shot. One the other edge of the battle Jules R keeps Steve’s pirates pinned down using the reduced gun crew as musketeers.

In the end the Pirates although much reduced in numbers held the island and treasures giving them a win for the day, but it was not one without costs as the British had scored numerous hits.

Thanks to all the players for joining in and their valuable input into the rules mods for this scenario. Both were greatly appreciated. Thanks also to the fine folks at Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support.

  1. Great looking game Kev!!!

The coastal stones *pop* with the mat’s graphics perfectly, and work to make the shore look 3D, almost sloped.

Not a lot – none I can see – of that non-thematic paraphernalia we’ve been taking about lately either.

This is one of the best local, retiree games I’ve seen lately. Congrats!

  2. Dave,
Thanks for the kind words. I did have a layer of pink foam cut to the shape of the island underneath the Cigar Box mat for a slope. Looks like my hacking with an old knife left over from my years in the grocery biz did okay. Still need to get more familiar with these rules, but I really like the smaller kit to carry and find itself spread across the table. Just D6s, range/movement sticks a half page QRS and some smoke for units that have fired. Less to carry, less to clutter the game table.

  3. The mat sloped super-well over your crafted island mass.

I’ll want to play this game!

(I think we’re getting closer and closer to being on the same half page too)
