Game Day West 07/05/25 Battle of Oliwa 1627

Battle of Oliwa 1627

Some of the fun of our hobby is researching and finding bits of history that are just a bit less well known and John Nozka brought one of these naval battles to the tables for us to enjoy at our July Game Day West.

Using “Letters of Marque” age of sail naval gaming rules John, who is always up to tell the tales of his Polish Heritage, weaved the story of the Battle of Oliwa.

It was on November 28, 1627, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Navy set out to engage the Swedish Navy and put an end to their blockading the port of Gdansk.

Some of the great models that John brought out for his game.

The game took a few unexpected twists and turns, but in the end found the Polish forces victorious and the blockade at least temporarily broken.

Thanks to John and his players for giving us a look at some history that just doesn’t make the usual parts of our educational system. Thanks of course to the folks at Miniature Market Rock Hill for their continued support.
